Record-Earning Champion Arrogate Dies At Age 7

Arrogate, the champion 3-year-old male of 2016 who retired as horse racing's highest earner of all-time, was euthanized Tuesday morning at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky. The cause of death remains to be determined, pending a post-mortem examination.

The 7-year-old son of Unbridled's Song was approaching the end of his third season at stud at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington.

Arrogate's breeding was suspended last week due to an initial suspected sore neck. Later in the week, he fell to the ground in his stall and efforts to get him back up proved unsuccessful. He was transported to the Hagyard Clinic under the care of Dr. Bob Hunt and Dr. Nathan Slovis with Dr. Steve Reed representing the insurance company.

The clinic ran a battery of tests including spinal tap evaluation, x-ray, ultrasound, CT Scan and many blood tests, but were unable to pin down the cause of Arrogate's issues. After four days, and the onset of secondary health concerns, the decision was made to euthanize the horse.
