Horse Racing: Keeneland surface renovation almost completeLEXINGTON, Ky. – The installation of a new dirt track at Keeneland Race Course has reached the finish line.

Construction crews on Thursday performed the last of the grading for the installation and used global positioning system devices to ensure the dirt is level and in the right amounts at the right places.

Officials at Keeneland — which is to play host to next year's Breeders' Cup, thoroughbred racing's year-end championships — have said the previous Polytrack surface wasn't attracting the top horses.

"In order to maintain our goal of providing the highest quality of racing, it became apparent that a dirt surface would give us that best opportunity as we move forward," Chief Operating Officer Vince Gabbert said.

"As we travel throughout the country, the enthusiasm we hear among horsemen is overwhelming due to the surface change, and we are equally excited about what that means for our race meetings," he said.
