Inaugural Pegasus World Cup: A Celebration of RacingAn all-time record handle of $40.217 million was set at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, January 28th across the 12-race program capped by the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). Pitched as a classic duel between 2 of the world's best Thoroughbreds: the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner and the winner of the Kentucky Derby, Prekaness Stakes and Dubai World Cup. From the inside gate, Arrogate came away the winner of while California Chrome finished well back after breaking from gate 12.
The handle record surpassed a previous record of $32.082 million set in 2016 during the 14-race Florida Derby (G1) Day.
Total handle on the $12 million Pegasus World Cup was $15.68 million.
The Pegasus was Arrogate's race. Ridden by Mike Smith, the Juddmonte colt finished 4 3/4 lengths over his closest rival, Adena Spring's Ontario-bred, Shaman Ghost. Starlight Racing's Neolithic finished 3rd.
The Park was electric from early in the day with many celebrities such as Usher, Vanessa Hudgens and Maria Manounos in attendance. 
“It should be the No. 1 sport in the world because it gives so many people the feeling they can be winners,” Gulfstream Park owner, Frank Stronach said. “Look at the spectators, they’re riding the horse home: ‘I’m Mike Smith, I’m riding, I’m riding.’ Even when you only have two bucks or five bucks on the horse, that’s great.”
