Horses gearing up for 147th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6th

Tale of Verve (right) and Divining Rod, Preakness 2015Belmont, NY ( - Preakness Stakes runner-up Tale of Verve is one of several 3-year-olds being pointed toward a showdown with American Pharoah in the 147th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6.

Although beaten seven lengths in the Preakness, Tale of Verve is a probable starter in the 1 1/2-mile "Test of the Champion" versus the winner of the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

"He's going to go to Belmont tomorrow," trainer Dallas Stewart said Sunday at Pimlico. "He ran so big yesterday. He's a tremendous horse.

"We think this horse will love a mile and a half."

Trainer Todd Pletcher did not have a horse in the Preakness, but is likely to saddle three for the Belmont Stakes. Coming from the Pletcher barn are Materiality, sixth in the Kentucky Derby; Carpe Diem, 10th in the Derby and Peter Pan Stakes winner Madefromlucky.

Other Derby horses lining up to take on American Pharoah are Keen Ice, seventh in the Derby; Mubtaahij, eighth in the Derby and Frammento, 11th in the Derby. Frosted, the fourth-place finisher, is still under consideration for the Belmont Stakes.

American Pharoah, owned by Zayat Stables and trained by Bob Baffert, is scheduled for a Monday flight from Baltimore to Louisville and is expected to arrive at Churchill Downs around 2 p.m. ET.

The colt is the 14th 3-year-old since Affirmed captured the Triple Crown in 1978 to have a chance at stopping the 37 year drought. Baffert has been in this situation three earlier times with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and in 2002 with War Emblem. War Emblem was ridden by Victor Espinoza who has the mount aboard American Pharoah.
