Horse Racing UK: Aidan O'Brien's Australia Favourite for Epsom Derby

Aidan O'Brien on Australia: There is no point in beating around the bush, we have never had a horse like this

Aidan O'Brien has hailed favourite Australia as a ‘Derby horse we have not had the like of before.’

The Irish trainer also revealed his stable is only now starting to flourish after a coughing bout knocked his operation off course in the opening weeks of the Flat season.

First effected was Australia, 11-8 favourite for the Investec-sponsored race with Coral, and although O’Brien said colt did not have to stop working despite being placed on antibiotics eight weeks before the first Classic of the season, the incident is a reason not to count the defeat too harshly.

Australia also had the tactical disadvantage of having to race away from the first two past the post as the field split into two groups on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

The positive turn of events with O’Brien sensing his string based at the famous Ballydoyle stables in Co Tipperary, has only served to increase optimism in the leading Epsom hope which O’Brien insists is the most talented horse he has ever run in a Classic he has won four times including the last two years.
