Horse Racing Australia: Vancouver wins the world's richest juvenile race

Horse Racing Australia: Vancouver wins the world's richest juvenile race[Australia's] Gai Waterhouse equalled the record of her late father Tommy Smith as Vancouver (Tommy Berry) led home stablemate English in the world's richest juvenile race.

With a total prize-fund of £1.8 million, with just over £1m going to the winner, the Golden Slipper is more valuable than any British horserace, but for Waterhouse being able to emulate her father was equally important.

She said: "The last words he said to me were 'You make a man sick. You can't train two-year-olds', then he passed away two days later.

"After that I thought I'm never going to let that be my thing. That was a driving force for me."

There were plenty of chances in the straight but Vancouver kept finding from a wide draw for Berry to hold off English, with Lake Geneva finishing fast in third.
