Horse Racing Australia: Lankan Rupee wins Lighting Stakes

Lankan Rupee (Mick Price/Craig Newitt) justified his reputation as one of the world’s best sprinters with a dominant display in the opening leg of the Global Sprint Challenge.
The race was billed as a match as Lankan Rupee and the previously unbeaten Deep Field vied for favouritism - and the strength in-depth was emphasised further by the presence of Brazen Beau - but only one horse mattered as the Mick Price-trained gelding blitzed his rivals.
The finishing time was 56.29s, 0.8s outside the race record set by Black Caviar, as Lankan Rupee evoked memories of the great mare the Group 1 is named after.
“The race was run properly and truly and the best horse on the day won. It was great to watch,” Price told AAP Racing.
“He’s been carving out sectionals mid-race, especially in Group 1 races and he's only Lankan Rupee, not Black Caviar.”
