Churchill Downs jackpot pick 6 approved by Kentucky Commission

After much debate and nearly no motion being made, Churchill Downs Racetrack received approval Tuesday from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for a jackpot pick 6 wager beginning with the fall meet.

The bet will be a 50-cent minimum with 80 percent of the pot being returned to bettors daily. Twenty percent will be reserved for a rolling jackpot that can be claimed only if there’s one winning ticket. Under the rules, which Churchill will have to publicize, the jackpot won’t be paid if there’s only one winner who has two perfect tickets.

The goal is to attract more wagering through massive jackpots, but the prospect of a player not getting the jackpot through no fault of their own (having a horse scratch late, giving him the favorite in the race where he already had on the ticket anyway — meaning he ends up beating himself out of the jackpot) caused concern for regulators and commission members both on Tuesday and at the September meeting.
