Arrogate arrives at Del Mar for Pacific Classic

Arrogate arrives at Del Mar for Pacific ClassicLady Luck was not on Del Mar’s side two summers ago when Triple Crown champion American Pharoah’s connections opted for the Haskell Invitational and Travers Stakes over a stakes schedule devoid of any big races for 3-year-olds on the dirt. All the four-leaf clovers and rabbit’s feet in the world were not going to keep American Pharoah in Southern California, where only the $1 million Pacific Classic beckoned. Not when the colt’s handlers didn’t want to face older horses until the Breeders’ Cup.
So Monmouth Park, Saratoga Race Course and Keeneland reaped the benefits of the afterglow of American Pharoah’s historic run while Del Mar officials were left to weep and dream about what could have been.
Well, they needn’t weep no more.
Arrogate, the world’s No. 1-ranked horse, arrived in town this week and is on schedule to make the final three starts of his 4-year-old campaign at Del Mar. It all begins Saturday when the son of Unbridled’s Song faces five rivals in the $300,000 Grade II San Diego Handicap, a prep for the Pacific Classic on Aug. 19.
