$1m Travers Stakes runs on Saturday at Saratoga

In 1941, Whirlaway, became the only horse to win both the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont) as well as The Travers Stakes. The Travers is the oldest Thoroughbred stakes race in the US and the 144th running takes place this Saturday at Saratoga.

Two of the best horses who will be entered in Saturday's $1 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course come from the same barn.

So, either way you look at it, Todd Pletcher nows he will have to deal with a grumpy owner early Saturday evening.

That's because his two highly regarded horses — Belmont winner Palace Malice and Haskell victor Verrazano — aren't going to finish in a dead heat. Deja vu at the Travers? No, probably not.

Pletcher has had plenty of practice in running multiple horses in big races. He had five horses in this year's Kentucky Derby (Verrazano and Palace Malice were two of them) and he also entered five in the Belmont.

This will be the second time he has had multiple runners in the Travers. In 2006 he had Bluegrass Cat (second) and High Cotton (fifth).

"I wish they could both go in there and win," Pletcher said outside his office at the Oklahoma Training Track. "It's just one of those things we have to do on occasion."

Verrazano has five owners, led by Let's Go Stable. Palice Malice is owned by Dogwood Stables, headed by Cot Cambpell.
