Queen’s Plate: Third Time a Lucky Charm for Frank Stronach
By Bev Smith

Frank Stronach doesn’t need luck.

“I am so lucky in everything I do,” he said, moments after winning his third Queen’s Plate with Shaman Ghost, a very, very slight second choice to Plate Trial winner Danish Dynaformer, who had about $2,000 more bet on him in the win pool.

But Stronach knows that a little bit of luck always helps. That’s why Stronach, as he has been known to do in the past, scours the race paddock for signs of a four-leaf clover, a rare wort in a sea of grass. And on Sunday at Woodbine racetrack, minutes before the Queen’s Plate, he found one. This is not unusual for Stronach. The anals of racing lore may show that he found one when Touch Gold won the Belmont Stakes. Who on this planet finds so many four-leaf clovers on demand?

Stronach gave the precious find to his granddaughter, who in turn presented it to jockey Rafael Hernandez, who stashed the greenery in his boot. And he won the Queen’s Plate with it. And then Stronach maxed out his fortune by praying to the shaman, the holy man, he said with a twinkle.

Stronach had previously won the Queen’s Plate with Basqueian in 1994 and Awesome Again in 1997. Stronach has been a rare visitor to Woodbine in recent years. Even when his horses have been up for Sovereign Awards, his wife, Elfriede, has carried the torch for the family. Stronach hasn’t had a horse in the Plate in three years, when Mobilizer finished 12th. Awesome Again’s win came 18 years ago, and since then, Stronach has had a second (Ginger Brew in 2008), and four thirds.
