AT&T: Kentucky Derby set new peak-hour mobile data usage record at a sports venue

Mobile data came out of the gates running this year at the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, setting a new peak-hour mobile data usage record at a sports venue.

From Opening Night to the thrill of the final 2-minute horse race, our customers were there to share all the Derby action with their friends and family. To make sure our customers had great coverage and could share their Derby hat selfies at Churchill Downs, we worked with Mobilitie to increase capacity to the Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

For the past year, our network team worked hard to give our customers a triple-crown worthy mobile experience – and the numbers show we delivered. Here’s what we saw from our customers using the DAS network at Churchill Downs.

Results showed this weekend’s total data volume at the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby races on AT&T’s in-venue wireless network and COW (Cell on Wheels) at more than 5.1 Terabytes.

That’s a 150 percent increase in data usage compared to last year.

That’s equivalent to more than 15.3 million social media posts with photos.

In addition, the record for most data used in a specific hour on an AT&T in-venue mobile network during any sporting event was set when data traffic peaked from 5pm-6pm EST. This was the hour leading up to the 6:40pm post time of the Kentucky Derby. During this hour, more than 474 Gigabytes of data crossed the AT&T network, ** outpacing the previous peak-hour record set at last year’s races.

With the first leg of the Triple Crown behind us, you can bet that AT&T will continue to roll out our latest network innovations to help keep you connected. Like the horses, your data is off to the races.

*Data usage includes total data used by AT&T customers only on the in-venue Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at Churchill Downs and AT&T’s Cell on Wheels (COW) deployed for the Kentucky Derby.
